The main purpose of the GFS-UAV project that I have started on March 10, 2006...

In the model GFS-UAV N-XX, the flaps will be replaced by a OAUGDP (One Atmosphere Glow Discharge Plasma) perilstatic accelerator and the hull charged at High Voltage as the Lifter craft or ARDA Wing such as to reduce the air drag.

See more infos at : http://jlnlabs.imars.com/plasma/html/s_gdpthr1.htm

There are different means for generating an asymmetrical flow with a GDP skin, this has already been fully tested by the Industrial Plasma Engineering Group of the UTK Plasma Sciences Laboratory :

- A simple OAUGDP panel which uses only the paraelectric body forces, this gives an acceleration of the fluid, up to 10 m/s,

- An EHD plasma convection driven by DC ion mobility drift, this gives an acceleration of the fluid, up to 100 m/s,

- A peristaltic EHD plasma acceleration which gives an acceleration of the fluid, up to 480 m/s....

For more informations you may read the paper 6P-67"Electrodynamically induced airflow in one atmosphere uniform glow discharge surface plasma" by J. Reece Roth, presented at the 25th IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science ( June 1-4, 1998, Raleigh, North Carolina )

The EHD FS - Computer Simulations

The current GFS-UAV Project is the genesis of a dragless and high efficiency saucer shaped craft based on the Coanda Effect.

This Coanda Saucer UAV project is composed of three major phases :

Phase One : Construction of a true UAV demonstrator ( the model N01, 60 cm diameter ) for testing the performance and the flight enveloppe of a saucer shaped craft which uses a pure aerodynamic Coanda effect. The UAV N-01 is Remote Controlled (RC) and fully electric powered with High Power Lithium Polymer (LiPo) batteries and uses a high efficient brushless DC outrunner motor. The phase one is now fully successful, a lot of test flights in various condition (no wind, light wind, windy, wind gusts...) have demonstrated that the use of the Coanda effect increases significantly the efficiency, the stability and enhance the flight enveloppe of a such craft. A lot of CFD simulations have been very helpfull to improve the shape of the UAV. During these tests flights, as a the test pilot of this Coanda UAV, I have gained a lot of experience and knowledge about the piloting method.

Phase Two : By using the experience aquired with the Phase One of the project, the purpose of the Phase Two is to build a bigger UAV ( The model N02, 1 meter diameter ) which will be able to carry more payload. In the Phase One, only the aerodynamic Coanda effect has been used, here in the Phase Two, Electro-AeroDynamics devices will be used to control dynamically the boundary layer flow and the drag of the air flow around the Coanda effect hull. Two kinds of devices will be tested, an electrokinetic assymetrical capacitor device already used in the Lifter and ARDA project for the air drag reduction and a peristaltic accelerator already tested in the OAUGDP project for the dynamic control of the boundary layer flow.  Some additional controls and avionics equipement will be also tested on the UAV N-02 plateform such as (an on board GPS, a 3D Inertial Motion Unit (IMU)). A such equipment will gives to the UAV N-02 the capabilitie of a self and autonomous flight for Low Alt tactical recognition and observation missions.

Phase Three : Towards a Flapless ElectroAerodynamics UAV : Developpement of a true EHD Coanda effect and autonomous UAV which will use the knowledge and the experience aquired during the previous phases of this project.

With a such craft design, it is possible to build a dragless and stealth UAV based on the Coanda effect which uses the EHD plasma technology...

Today in need to build up a good and skilled team in RC UAV design to go forward in this field of research...

Sincerely,
