The One Atmosphere Plasmoid

When the microwave oven is switched on, some brillant and white flashes
are sent silently by the burning charcoal during about 5 seconds...

And suddenly a very short ( few milliseconds ) and a strong big blue flash fill all
the volume of the microwave oven ( see the picture below )

and then, a plasmoid coming from the burning charcoal climbs up to the top
of the transparent vessel and
remains stable with a loud humming...

BE CAREFULL : Don't run the microwave oven more than 10 seconds, because the glass vessel is warming,
so check it after a short test run and let it cool a bit. Conduct all your tests in a well ventiled area.

The orange colour of the gaz inside the glass vessel after a run, confirms the presence of NO2 and thus Nitrogen Oxide.
At the end of the plasmoid experiment put this vessel outside and in open air so as to let all the NO2 out of the vessel.

Notes : I did not succeed with a candle, the toothpick works well because it is made of wood. Ionized carbon fibers are required to get the plasmoid effect in the microwave oven. As you may notice in the picture above, in spite of the thin diameter of the wooden rod (the toothpick) , after some runs of the plasmoid apparatus, the wooden rod has not been fully burned because it has been used only to initiate the reaction.

If you have some difficulties to find a spherical vessel, you may use two common Pyrex (tm) bowls, the plasmoid generated will be less stable ( a bit crratic ) than with a real sphere, but this will show you easily that the plasmoid experiment works. A sound analysis of the plasmoid "humming" noise has shown that its frequency is about 250 Hz.
